AI is a concern in almost every career field, and strategic media is no exception.
Choosing a career path is a big decision, and the potential impact that AI may have on a field’s future can make that decision nerve-wracking. In strategic media, the ability to connect with people is key, and that requires experience that an AI can’t duplicate.
Communication is about connection
The rise of AI has made it possible for people of all skill levels to craft media materials of all sorts. From news releases to social media posts, it’s easier than ever for brands and businesses to churn out content and present it to the world, but new tools bring new challenges. Audiences are now inundated with a non-stop stream of content. In order to stand out from the crowd, the need for quality content and sound strategies is arguably more important than ever.
Connecting with audiences and telling stories is at the heart of strategic media, and the importance of creative thinkers with unique perspectives in the field cannot be overstated. AI may be able to crank out a lot of content in a short amount of time, but it can’t replicate the human touch needed to truly connect with people. Good writers, designers, editors, etc., know how to understand an audience as people rather than statistics. That understanding and their unique perspectives allow them to craft messages and materials that speak to that audience in a manner that can’t be control C-ed. AI can create content quickly, but content created with a personal touch can connect with an audience and make them feel something. That connection is key to a successful campaign.
Strategy is about understanding
A strong campaign needs more than content. It requires a sound strategy. AI may be able to slap together a plan based on what others have done in the past, but a quality strategy requires more than a knowledge of past trends. It requires the ability to anticipate and adapt in real time. A good campaign is about connecting with people, and people are not statics. Opinions and feelings can change rapidly. The ability to act on real-time feedback is crucial, and adapting to that feedback requires an understanding of why the changes are occurring. A personal touch is vital to this understanding. If strong content makes an audience feel a way, an effective strategist understands why.
New tools require skilled users
None of this is to say that AI is inherently bad. There is no doubt that AI can be a remarkably useful tool. However, like any tool, it can only be as good as the person who is using it. As advanced as AI has become, there is still a need for highly skilled and educated professionals who know how to use this tool and tackle the challenges it presents. An education in Strategic Media can help prepare you to be that skilled professional.
From Journalism and Public Relations to Advertising and Marketing, the need for creative people who can understand and connect with an audience will always be there.
