School is important. Preparing for a new year of classes is important. Working hard is important. Planning for your future career is important. You know what’s more important?
Your sanity!
Rest for your health
Tests, papers, work, classes, it’s enough to make you feel like you’ve got the world resting on your shoulders and an elephant sitting on your chest. You’ve spent all year working hard, and you haven’t just earned a break; you need a break.
Continually carrying the stresses of studying and working without taking time for yourself isn’t just unpleasant; it’s flat-out unhealthy. According to the Mayo Clinic, constant stress can cause anxiety, memory problems, a weakened immune system, sleep problems, depression, and more.
When you take time and allow yourself to rest, relax, and reset, you’re not just recharging to be better prepared to return to class or work. You’re taking time to allow your body and mind to recover. Think about it. You wouldn’t go to the gym and train the same muscle group day after day with no rest period. If you did, you’d eventually injure yourself. Why wouldn’t you give your mind the same rest time that you give your glutes? There is an argument to be made that your mind is more important.
Recharge for your work
Of course, if you’re the type of person who doesn’t believe in rest for the benefits of rest, maybe the productivity benefits of taking a break could convince you to take some time to chill. A good old-fashioned summer break might just be the thing you need to return in the fall prepared to take on the world.
The stress, anxiety, mental fatigue, and myriad other issues brought about by never taking a break are all productivity killers. Multiple studies have shown that taking time away from work or class can lead to better performance upon your return.
Allowing yourself to become burned out leads to less satisfaction in the work you’re doing. When you experience a low level of work satisfaction, you become less motivated. When you become less motivated, your performance takes a nosedive. Diving into a pool could help prevent that.
Taking a break from your usual work-filled day can also lead to improved creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Taking time to disconnect and get away from your normal routine can allow you to come back with a new perspective that helps you tackle your life’s challenges in new and exciting ways.
Relax because you deserve it
Whether it’s taking time off to allow yourself to recover from a year of hard work or taking time off to prepare for a year of hard work, there is no denying the benefits of taking some time off. So, leave school at school, and enjoy your summer for your mental health, physical health, and your future self.
