A Pop Star's Political Awakening

Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated documentary Taylor Swift: Miss Americana premiered on Netflix on January 31. This documentary explores a pivotal year in Swift’s life as she comes to grip with her fame and finds her political voice. Before premiering on Netflix, the film opened at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. Hours after premiering on Netflix, the film received a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The documentary dives deep into Swift’s personal life by showcasing her struggles with an eating disorder, the year she disappeared to find herself and the need to speak out against senator Marsha Blackburn and President Trump. Swift’s inspiration for stepping into the political spotlight and taking on Blackburn and Trump was her 2018 sexual assault case. Swift couldn’t stop thinking about what an impact it made on her life and other women who have been through the same experiences. She no longer was okay with others deciding her political loyalty or what policies she stood for. Swift said, “I just thought to myself, next time there is any opportunity to change anything, you better know what you stand for and what you want to say.”
Twitter’s reaction to the documentary was mostly positive, with many people praising Swift for her honesty and vulnerability.
