Royal to Regular

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been in the media since announcing their relationship in October 2016. While many people were excited about their union, not everyone shared in their happiness. Since their marriage, Meghan Markle has been scrutinized by the media, mainly in Britain, for her race and how she fits in the monarchy. Harry made his first public statement to the press about his relationship in November, 2016, pleading to the press to “stop the wave of abuse and harassment” that his then girlfriend had to deal with at the time. He has been concerned for her safety ever since.

This Washington Post article goes in more detail on how the media affected their decision.

Despite the media being a factor in their relationship, they kept on with their relationship and brought a child into the world in May 2019. In January Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to step down as royals to live a more private life and become financially independent from the family. By stepping down from their positions, they no longer have the financial security they once had. They still plan to support the queen by traveling back and forth between North America and Europe to still fulfill the duties to the queen. Since this news, the media has been reporting that the other members of the royal family were hurt and blindsided, saying that their decision to step down was selfish and broke century-old traditions. Although, it has been reported that the queen supports their decision to step down, the media continues to scrutinize Meghan and Harry.

With the media attention that the couple received, it is understandable why they would choose to live a private life. Harry feared for Meghan since the beginning of their relationship, and now that they have a child, their safety is their number one priority.

What would you have done if you were Meghan or Harry? Would you stop being a royal to be regular? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
